Live Shalwar Kameez Face to Face Course

Leading the way in the Shalwar Kameez sewing world, is Rizwana Yunus who has over 30 years of experience in this field and is totally passionate about not losing our culture, and teaching more and more people how to Cut and Sew.

 Get confident with taking your own body measurements and applying them to our unique pattern cutting system, to get a great FIT for your Shalwar Kameez.

 You will use these measurements to construct your own pattern and cut onto fabric and sew up the full Kameez and Trouser, all in one full weekend. We generally start at 10am and finish at 5pm on both days.

What you will go home with..

 

Within two days, you'll be taking home two comprehensive patterns: a custom-tailored Kameez Pattern, adjusted to perfectly fit your body, and a Trouser Pattern. You'll also have the chance to construct these garments using your sewing machine, allowing you to leave with a fully made Kameez and a Straight Trouser. How exciting to leave with something that YOU have made from scratch.

 In addition to this, you'll depart with a sense of pride, the beginnings of some wonderful friendships, and a mentor for life. (Via a WhatsApp group) An experience that's truly priceless!

What you will learn in the 2 days

Course content: Day 1

10am: How to take measurements from a female body.

10.30: Drafting out your own pattern onto paper

12.30: Draft out sleeves and facings onto paper

1.00: Lunch break - Please bring a packed lunch

1.30: Cut out your Trouser pattern onto paper

2.00: Folding fabric up ready to cut out kameez

2.30: Cut out the kameez, sleeves and facings, and trousers onto fabric.

3.30: 15/ 20 min coffee break

4.15: How to sew up the neckline on a template

5.00: Pack up and finish

Equipment you must bring with you

  • Sewing Machine. If buying new please download the Free Sewing Machine guide.
  • Fabric (good quality cotton for first timers) 3m 60” wide or 5m if 45” wide
  • Matching thread, good quality - Moon, Gutterman or Madeira
  • Pen
  • Pencil (I prefer the leaded ones)
  • 30cm ruler
  • Paper scissors
  • Fabric scissors (if buying new, ask for recommendation)
  • Tape measure
  • Pins (please buy good quality)
  • Tailors chalk
  • Seam ripper
  • Masking tape
  • Iron-on interfacing
  • Pattern cutting paper and handouts will be provided

I love wearing shalwar kameez and I wanted to be able to sew my own suit. In Rizwana’s class, I learnt to make my own pattern, how to make front and back neck and how to put together my suit, and I loved it, especially having amazing tutors to guide us I think if we all had same level of basic sewing skill and worked on similar paces I think would have been better, But I do understand we all do not have the same sewing skills. 

I feel that I have learnt a skill that no one can take away from me, and after completing this weekend I feel really excited that I CAN REALLY DO THIS! My goal is now to do my best to practice as much as I can. But I love the idea Rizwana is with me until I want to end this journey.

An amazing tutor for life. Pssss… when Rizwana says she will get back to you when she can, she really does get back and does not say for sake of it!

My fav lesson was the pattern making because you can’t sew anything if you do not have a pattern and now, I have enough knowledge to make my pattern I know I can perfect the rest.

Best moment had to be when we individually tried on our Kameez. The excitement on each student’s face was priceless. Even better Rizwana’s face! She really does have a true passion for sewing and she made the workshops VERY enjoyable.

Sewing was something I wanted to do for a long time and I was so thrilled excited when I saw this course advertised.

I found the pattern making and sewing the Kameez useful and I really enjoyed the lessons and I really feel that I have achieved something good. And I feel great that I can now SEW 🤩 and of course I will continue to sew. My fav lesson was making the neck line as I felt it was most challenging and my best moment was understanding how everything is connected.

I did feel tired and frustrated at times but I had the tutors on hand to help.Overall was a fab course - Thank you

I Always wanted to learn but never found a convenient course. I also have purchased the online course and have found Rizwana’s tutorials very easy to follow. I learnt measuring and adjusting body measurements to accommodate onto a pattern. I learnt how to fold fabric prior to cutting. Best of all I learnt that I CAN do it! It will be very useful for me to make suits for me and my daughters.

I really enjoyed the lessons and didn’t want them to end! I think we learnt a lot for a weekend and we had a full suit as promised. So, for a beginners kameez sewing course it’s perfect as is. I feel like I have 110% achieved a goal and a mentor for life! And now that I can sew, I feel amazing! I can’t wait to improve more through practice, and can’t wait to continue 

My favourite lesson was the making of the trousers because I was shocked how easy it was. Also, I liked doing the neckline. And my best moment was when the kameez fit because it means my pattern was done well. I honestly did not want the course to end - can’t wait to do further courses with Rizwana on advanced styles, in fact I have booked onto the Abaya class with her in LONDON.

I have always wanted to learn how to make Asian clothes and wanted to really learn this skill and I have learnt so many different skills with this course.

- How to use the paper pattern and cut onto fabric.

- ⁠How to thread and use a sewing machine.

- ⁠How to make a neck design using Iron-on-Interfacing. 

I very much enjoyed the course, it was so useful and I had so much fun whilst learning so many different skills.

I feel very confident and also more because I know if I need any help Rizwana will be on the other side of the phone and I cannot wait to continue with sewing. I very much enjoyed the neckline and making the trousers because Rizwana made the process so easy. 

My best moment was when I finished my kameez and saw how well I made it, which meant everything I learnt was very useful. My bad moment was when I attached one sleeve wrong but Rizwana was there to quickly show me how to rectify the problem. Overall, I loved the course - Thank you ❤️

My reason for learning is to be able to make my own Shalwar Kameez at home and try and help my family also who cannot afford to get them made by tailors. I learnt how to measure and cut the fabric which was the most important part for me I really enjoyed the lessons and really feel I have achieved the confidence to sew. I feel Amazing now that I know how to sew as I’ve been wanting to learn for such a Long time, and I will definitely continue with sewing. My favourite lessons were the sewing ones as you finally get to see the results

I Wanted to learn how to sew a kameez, to go alongside other sewing courses I have done.I learnt how to cut a kameez and put it together and I will make my own kameez in future I very much enjoyed the two days and everyone in the class was so friendly, and I really felt at home.

I don’t think anything could be improved, it was 10 out of 10 and well organised and structured. I really feel I have definitely achieved something this weekend.
