How Do I Make Bell Sleeves on a Kameez?

Bell sleeves are the perfect way to add elegance and flair to your Shalwar Kameez. Flowing from the elbow or wrist, they create a graceful, feminine silhouette that looks both traditional and trendy.

If you’ve ever admired a Kameez with dramatic sleeves and thought, “I wish I could make that,” — good news! You can. This guide will show you how to make bell sleeves on a kameez, step by step.

What You’ll Need

  • Fabric (choose something soft with drape, like chiffon, lawn, or georgette)
  • Measuring tape
  • Fabric chalk or marker
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread
  • Iron

Step 1: Cut the Basic Sleeve

Start by cutting your regular sleeve pattern — either full-length or three-quarter length.

Measure from your shoulder to the point where you want the bell to start (usually around the elbow). Mark this as your bell start line.

Step 2: Create the Bell Flare

Now it’s time to add the signature “bell” shape!

  1. From your bell start line, cut the lower part of the sleeve horizontally.
  2. Using a new piece of fabric, cut a flared circular or semi-circular piece — the wider the circle, the more dramatic your bell.
  3. Match the top edge of the flare to the bottom edge of your upper sleeve.

Pro tip: To create a soft fall, use a half-circle shape. For more volume, go for a full circle.

Step 3: Join and Finish

With right sides together, sew the flared bell piece to the bottom of your sleeve.

Finish the seam with zigzag stitching or an overlock to prevent fraying.

Finally, hem the bell edge neatly and press everything flat.

Step 4: Attach the Sleeve to the Kameez

Sew the sleeve onto your kameez as you normally would. Once you press the armhole seam, your beautiful bell sleeves are ready to shine!
