How to Thread an Overlocker Without the Stress

If you are sewing Shalwar Kameez, Abaya and other traditional clothing, an overlocker is your best friend. It trims fabric edges and finishes seams neatly in one step, giving your handmade outfits a professional boutique look. But let’s be honest - threading an overlocker can feel overwhelming at first but once you understand the process, it becomes quick, easy and stress free.

Here is how to thread your overlocker with confidence.

When we sew Shalwar Kameez, Abayas and other modest and traditional garments we often use lightweight flowy fabrics that fray easily like georgette, chiffon, organza and even cotton. Using an overlocker ensure clean, durable seams that won’t unravel and give our clothing professional finishes that look boutique ready, and the best part it really saves time as it trims and finishes in one go.

Using an overlocker is literally a game changer as described by all my Shalwar Kameez and abaya students. I always encourage my students to get comfortable with their overlocker, as it really transforms the quality of your work.

Follow this 4-step procedure to take the overwhelm out of your overlocker

Step 1: Prepare your threads

Most overlocker use 3-4 comes of thread. Choose strong good quality cones in a matching or neutral colour. Place them securely on the thread stand before Starting.

Step 2: Follow the colour-coded path

Modern overlockers  have a colour coded guide for each thread. Always follow the threading order shown in your manual. There are 4 threadways to thread:

  1. Upper looper
  2. Lower looper
  3. Right needle
  4. Left needle

If you are nervous about threading for the first time, you can use 4 different colours to practice. This will help you see how each thread forms part of the stitch. I love this idea as it can give a rainbow look to your garments inside making them more fun and playful.

Step 3: Thread in the right order

The key to stress free threading is doing it in order, if your skip this sequence your stitches may not form correctly:

Upper looper, lower looser, right needle, left needle

Step 4: Double check tension and test

After threading, pull all threads under the presser foot and sew off a few stitches. Adjust your tension dials if needed until the stitches look balanced and secure
