Overlocker vs sewing machine - what’s the difference?
If you are a new sewer, you have probably heard of a sewing machine and an overlocker (also called a serger) and not know the difference between them
Do you need both?
Which one to start with?
Let’s break it down in simple terms:
The sewing machine is the main machine that you will be starting your sewing journey with. You can sew two prices of fabric together, you can make necklines, you can make decorative stitches, and even make buttonholes.
This is your MAIN MACHINE - it can do almost anything!

An overlocker is a machine that neatens the RAW EDGES of a fabric. It gives your clothes a neat finish and makes them look really professional. The overlocker has a blade on the edge and as you sew it trims off all excess fabric.
The overlocker only has one function and you cannot do much else with it besides neaten your seams and raw edges but it is an actual game changer for a sewer
And no, you don’t need to buy an overlocker straight away - in my courses I talk about and show my students how to use the zig zag feature to neaten seams
So u can start your sewing journey with a basic sewing machine and upgrade as you go. No need for fancy tools. Focus on building your confidence and the rest will follow.
