How to take accurate body measurements for a perfect Shalwar Kameez fit. 

Nothing is more frustrating than spending hours sewing a shalwar kameez only to find it doesn’t fit properly. The secret to a beautifully tailored outfit isn’t just in the stitching - it all starts with accurate body measurements, and getting accurate body measurements is the foundation to perfect sewing. 

Whether you are a beginner or someone who wants to refine their skills, this step by step guide will help you create the perfectSshalwar Kameez:

Why measurements matter

• A well fitted kameez enhances comfort and style 
• Proper shalwar measurements ensure the trousers fall correctly, whether they are loose or fitted 
• Saves fabric, time and frustration by avoiding errors 

Which body parts to we measure?

Kameez length - Place the tape measure on the highest part of shoulder, and measure down making sure you go over the fullest part of the bust. Determine your kameez length – and note Kameez length can differ each time to personal preference 

Round the bust: Wrap the tape measure around the fullest part of the bust, keeping it snug but not tight. We also add further to this for ease 

Round the waist: Measure around the natural waistline, above the belly button. The waistline is the smallest part of our bodies. Ease will need to be added to the measurement 

Round the hips: Place the tape measure around the fullest part of the hips. This is a very important measurement and we will also need to add ease 

Shoulder width: Measure form one shoulder bone to the other across the back. This defines how the Kameez sits on the body 

Sleeve length: Measure from shoulder to wrist, or shorter of you are making shirt sleeve 

Shalwar length: Measure from waist to ankle on the outer leg to ensure accurate measurements 

 Quick tips: Do not pull the tape measure too tight, and do not measure over bulky clothes, measure over light clothing. Write down your measurements immediately and when drafting your pattern learn to trust your tape measure
