How to choose the right fabric for your shalwar kameez?

Choosing the correct fabric for your Shalwar Kameez is one of the main parts to a successful and comfortable Shalwar Kameez. 

Choosing fabric may feel overwhelming, so many colours, textures and weights, but choosing the right fabric can make all the difference to how your outfit looks and feels. Not to mention choosing correctly according to your body shape and size 

Firstly, we must understand the 3-part outfit 

The kameez, The Shalwar and the Dupatta 

• The Kameez is the long Tunic
• The Shalwar is the loose trouser 
• The Dupatta is the optional long scarf 

Secondly, we must match the fabric to the occasion.

Are you wanting a shalwar kameez for a wedding, or for Eid or for everyday? Also consider the country you are in for the weather conditions that you will be wearing it in

If you are looking for an everyday outfit, consider cotton, lawn or viscose especially for hotter climates. Linen blends, crepes and crinkle fabrics will also work for everyday 

For special occasions consider silks, organza, chiffons, georgettes, lace

In Winter or in colder climates, choose wool blends, wool, heavier cotton and polyester 

But remember to pick fabric that have a drape especially for shalwar so the pleats fall nicely 

TIP: avoid slippery fabric if you are beginner 

Choose fabrics that are comfortable: 

Comfortable fabrics will feel soft on the skin, be breathable and have enough drape to fall and drape well. 

Understand how fabrics drape and flow: 

Heavier fabrics like Jacquard and Brocade give a structural look and lighter fabrics like chiffon and georgette will offer a floaty feminine look 

Understanding Fabric widths and quantity: 

Most fabrics come in 44”/45” or 58”/60” width. 

For a standard size you will need 3-4 m for a Kameez and Shalwar combined (without the dupatta)with 60” inch wide fabric and 5 metres for 44” wide fabric 

 TIP: Buy a little extra if your fabric has a large print or border
