Top 5 sewing mistakes when sewing your own abayas
Sep 09, 2025- Not understanding the importance of fit - even with loose garments - always take accurate measurements of your body and test your pattern first
- Not understanding shoulder shapes - the shoulder slope affects how a garment drapes. A shoulder that is too flat can cause the fabric to bunch at the neckline.
- Too much bulk under the sleeves - if your measurements are not applied correctly, you will end up with too much fabric under the arms.
- The joint armhole makes sewing an abaya very easy but you can make them either too tight causing pulling and discomfort or too wide which makes the garment lose shape and structure
- Choosing the wrong fabric for the design - don’t use a heavy fabric like jacquard and brocade as it will make your abaya stiff, choose drapey breathable fabrics like Nida and Fursaan and Crepe
