How to choose beautiful fabrics for your shalwar kameez and what to look out for

Feb 23, 2023

Yes, we love our Shalwar Kameez, but we love some far more than others. And of course, we have our favourites. For me, I always love wearing the comfiest ones and I especially like the ones which have softer fabrics, as I feel they flow and sit better on my body. (Which is naturally curvy)

The type of salwar kameez material chosen is crucial to determining the over-all look and feel of the outfit and can even end up dictating if the salwar suit can be worn for casual wear occasions or formal events.

So here I explore all the different fabrics that Shalwar kameez are made from:

Organza: Organza is generally see-through and stiff. If you have a curvy figure then its not going to compliment your body shape as much. It’s a nice fabric for slim figures.

You will always have to fully line an organza suit and will have to sew it to a perfect fit to your body for the best look

Cotton: Cotton Shalwar Kameez material is definitely the most popular. This is because cotton has many properties that make it suitable for casual wear. It is absorbent, breezy and soft, which can combat the hot and humid summer weather.

Perfect for hot countries like India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

However, not so practical for people like us here in the UK.

Cotton, can also be dyed into a number of gorgeous colours, ensuring that any outfits created with cotton can be vibrant and beautiful despite their casual look. Usually, women prefer to go for pure cotton salwar kameez material as this is the softest.

Georgette, Crepe and Chiffon: Perhaps the most popular designer Shalwar Kameez material is georgette, known for its soft, flowing look and strong texture which can easily support heavy and gorgeous embroideries and embellishments.

Chiffon is also used to make stylish Anarkali’s as it has a very graceful, sensuous look that drapes the body beautifully. Crepe, another woven yarn, is preferred for formal occasions and office wear suits as it has a crinkled, crease-resistant appearance and a light and pretty look.

Satin: Satin fabric has a lovely sheen to it and has a shiny finish to it. Generally, the shalwar fabric in an unstitched suit is a plain satin.

It is important to note that there are different qualities available in satin finishes and some weaves can be very cheap-looking so do check the quality before buying. There are some satin unstitched suits out there but they are not as popular generally.

Net and tissue Fabric: Net and tissue fabric is a textile in which the yarns are fused, looped or knotted at their intersections, resulting in a fabric with open spaces between the yarns. Net fabric comes in a lot of different types, and can be used for kameez designs and dupattas.
